Dzey Z Smith

Actor, Drag King, Writer, Facilitator, Dancer

Tell us about yourself

Dzey has had many iterations of his influence on queer theatre and artistry. Having trained in contemporary dance, his early career was exploring the limits the binary holds over dance through his own choreography alongside working as an international dancer. He now works as an actor and drag performer “Richard Energy”. He has performed all over the country and Europe in drag including two runs on the West End. His work in the drag and cabaret scene extends far beyond performance, he is a leader and mentor. From creating innovative makeup techniques that are taught to drag kings across the UK to stand up comedy classes and 1-1 mentoring sessions.  He has a passion for intergenerational work within the trans community and advocating for causes in his activism roles. His work practices and ethos focus on art building community and spaces that can be seen as a home.

What excites you about being part of the ARTCRY panel?

To be able to facilitate urgency around political art. I would like to able to help give a voice to artists that are directly affected by the causes they are talking about.

What components would your dream application have?

Passion; People that have a clear understanding of their subject matter and a clear point of view on it. An understanding of what they want to change, a passionate voice for their art and subject.

The Steering Committee

The company directors and panel are involved on an individual capacity, not representing their organisations and on a voluntary basis.

If you are interested in joining the panel in future please email Kathryn Bilyard on kathryn@artcry.co.uk with some information about yourself and why you are interested.
