Award 12: El Presto Project

We thrilled to announce our newest grantee the El Presto project, using art to stand in solidarity with those affected by suicide.

In December 2021, a father was prosecuted for spray painting in Brighton. His reason? To raise awareness of poor youth mental health after his 25-year-old son lost his life to suicide.

In response Gallery Lock In with local street artists SinnaOne, Rob VonGlas and Mazcan are running the El Presto project to continue the work Paul started. They are raising awareness of poor mental health for young people in partnership with Art in Mind who support young people experiencing mental health issues in Brighton.

El Presto Project is also raising money to support Paul to pay his fine to send a message to Brighton Council that it was unnecessary action against a grieving father. They want to demonstrate to the council and the community that art does have the power to be transformative, can bring communities together and provide a powerful tool for expressing emotions, whether they are around personal grief or collective unrest.

Support the campaign here https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-presto-project/ Any money beyond the money raised to support Paul will go to Young Minds and Artcry!

SinnaOne, Rob VonGlas and Mazcan are creating a public mural and will also run a series of creative workshops across February at Gallery Lock In (Brighton BN1 2PU). You'll also be able to contact the team for information and guidance on where and how to safely and legally make your won street art.

3rd Feb / 7-9pm: Yarnbombing with MazCan

15th Feb / 7-9pm: Graffiti with Rob VonGlas

You can get involved to through Auction The Wall - if you donate to the campaign the artists will hand-draw your design into the mural on a live drawing day on 19 February. You can also get stickers and prints by donating to the campaign to display in your own windows in solidarity with Paul and in support of those struggling with their mental health.

More About The Team...

Sinna One is a Brighton based artist and muralist. His work focuses on exploring spray paint as primary medium. He is an experienced community artist, regularly holding workshops in Brighton for a range of groups, including homeless young people through the Clock Tower charity. He also runs regular sessions at Brighton Youth Centre, encouraging young people to take up painting and channel their efforts creatively.

Rob Von Glas is a character artist based in Brighton. His distinctive illustrative style is the result of a symbiosis between digital and traditional workflows. Rob’s creative output has become a tool he employs to catalyse relationships. As such, much of his work reflects the idiosyncrasies observed in both his environment and those around him.

MazCan is a Brighton-based street artist who focusses on realist portraiture. She has been regularly commissioned to create work in Brighton and at other street art festivals around the UK. She also creates commissions and has recently taken up yarn bombing by knitting covers for lampposts across the City.
